Official Virgin Mobile ICS update for the HTC EVO 3D leaks, looks like the real deal

Released way back in July last year, the HTC EVO 3D was stuck for a while on the list of smartphones “in line” for an Android 4 Ice Cream Sandwich update. And while several unofficial (and buggy) ICS builds came out from different independent developers, a stable and official update left EVO 3D users hanging.

Fortunately, HTC’s 4.3-incher is no longer left behind, as it seems you can finally enjoy all the Ice Cream Sandwich goodness you have been waiting so long for. An official Virgin Mobile ICS build has been leaked by RootzWiki’s Team Virtuous, and, as far as we can tell right now, the software package is the real deal and is as stable as they get.

The leaked build brings Android 4.0.3 to the EVO 3D with HTC’s Sense 3.6 UI on top. That’ just a little behind the times, with Android 4.0.4 being around for more than a month, but it should not make that much of a difference for the day-to-day user.

The original Android 4.0 build can be downloaded from this RootzWiki link here. If you want to enjoy a fully functioning ROM that you can flash on your phone right away, XDA Developers’ JoelZ9614 was the first one to get everything in place for you. Both the Virtuous developers team and Joel claim that there are no significant bugs and all the phone’s features are fully functional, but you should still watch out for kinks anyway.

Also, if you’re not highly experienced with flashing custom ROMs on your phone, you should carefully read the entire thread on the XDA Developers forum and follow Joel’s instructions to the letter. Also, this is a leaked software package – the official Ice Cream Sandwich build should be released very soon, so you might be safer if you give it just a little more time!

So, how about it, EVO 3D users? Are you relieved to find out that there’s hope for your device after all? Will you wait for an official build or have you already flashed the leaked ROM?

HTC just gave word on its’ official Facebook page that the first round of Android 4.0 updates would be available before the end of March, and it looks like the HTC Thunderbolt will not be in the first round. So what phones are getting updated?

  • HTC Sensation 4G
  • HTC Sensation XE
  • HTC Sensation XL
  • HTC Rezound
  • HTC EVO 3D
  • HTC EVO Design 4G
  • HTC Vivid
  • HTC Incredible S
  • HTC Desire S
  • HTC Desire HD

Here’s HTC’s full official statement:

HTC has been working hard to get its Ice Cream Sandwich upgrades ready, and we’re excited to announce that our first round of ICS upgrades will roll out by the end of March for the HTC Sensation, HTC Sensation 4G and HTC Sensation XE, followed soon there after by the HTC Sensation XL.

In addition, we can confirm Ice Cream Sandwich upgrades will be coming later this year to the HTC Rezound, HTC Vivid, HTC Amaze 4G, HTC EVO 3D, HTC EVO Design 4G, HTC Incredible S, HTC Desire S and HTC Desire HD. Stay tuned for more updates on Ice Cream Sandwich releases in the coming weeks.

Not a bad roster to start off with. But surprisingly the HTC Thunderbolt is missing. Thunderbolt owners just can’t catch a break, hopefully either HTC surprises us and brings an update to the Thunderbolt by March or it’s at the top of round two, whenever that will be.

Is your phone listed here? Are you excited to finally get a taste of Ice Cream Sandwich on your HTC device? Let us know in the comments.

Mod for EVO 3D Allows Device Wake Using Swipe Gesture

Finding ways to wake a phone besides the old power button can be a challenge for some phones. For those who still have phones with the Blackberry style navigation ball or the front touch pad, such as the HTC G2, there are mods out there that will give you the ability to unlock your phone using those. So what about phones without any physical front buttons?

This is a problem that XDA Senior Member bponury is working to fix for at least those carrying the HTC EVO 3D. bponury has created a kernel module that will allow screen unlocking capabilities on the EVO 3D using screen swipe gestures instead of the traditional power button. The app developer has also added the functionality to lock the screen the same way, using screen gestures.

To add to the convenience, you can find the mod in the Android Market here, which makes installation a breeze. Just grab your HTC EVO 3D, make sure it’s rooted and then go to the link and install. It’s just that easy. Additionally, there’s even a how to video in the description that shows you how to make the screen turn on and off using the mod.

For those who want to give it a shot, simply follow the Market link above with your rooted EVO 3D and give it a test run.

APK Makes Windows 95/98/XP and Linux Run on EVO 3D

Running computer operating systems on a phone is always an interesting experience. For most phones, booting into Linux is hard enough and Windows isn’t even an option. The HTC EVO 3D is not one of those phones.

XDA Senior Member mnomaanw has posted a method that will get Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows XP and Linux running on the HTC EVO 3D in a relatively easy process that can be done pretty quickly. Basically, all a user needs to do is download the required software, modify a file or two and run the apk. Wait for it to boot and you’re ready to go.

Controls are pretty easy to understand and make excellent use of the hardware as well as the home and menu buttons. The instructions are as follows:

- It emulate touchpad on touchscreen and left/right mouse buttons on volume
- You can also click touch screen to generate mouse left button click.(this does not work everytime)
- Back = BackSpace, Menu = Enter, left-upper corner click generates TAB
- left-lower corner click popups keyboard

For those who want to give their EVO 3D some Windows or Linux love, they can find all the downloads and instructions in the thread here but make sure to take the proper precautions, such as backing up your device.
