Samsung Galaxy S3 Canada roundup: probable price, availability, and release dates [Updated]

May 10: Updated with fresh info on the retailers and carriers that will offer the Samsung Galaxy S3 in Canada. Plus, a rumor about the LTE Galaxy S3 using an Exynos chip.

Hey there, Canadian tech enthusiasts, how’s it going? Are you excited about the Samsung Galaxy S3? Of course you are, as is the entire technology world after finding out yesterday exactly what Sammy’s new flagship smartphone is all about!

The Galaxy S3 finally has a full spec sheet next to its name, a confirmed name, a fresh design (which we love, by the way) and even a couple of short appearances in hands-on videos. However, there are still many important details missing from the equation, which is why we’re doing our absolute best to inform you on any and every aspect you could be interested in.

We’ve talked all about the Galaxy S3 in the United States and in Europe and now the time has come to gather around all the things we know, we don’t know and we would like to know about the S3 in Canada.

Samsung Galaxy S3 Canadian carriers

Although Samsung Canada was reluctant to name any names of possible carriers from which you’ll be able to buy the S3, experience tells us that technology users in the North will have a chance to purchase the phone no matter what their network preferences are.

The Galaxy S2 was put up for sale by Bell Mobility, Telus, and Rogers Wireless last year in Canada and we’re almost sure we will see the S3 in the three carriers’ offers too.

On the other hand, we have to notice that things are a bit more mysterious here than they are when talking about US availability, which is a bit strange. The Samsung US’ registration page for the S3 already has a list of carriers where the phone is expected to show up, as we informed you earlier today, while the similar Canadian registration site doesn’t mention anything on this front.

That might well mean that one of the three main carriers will be missing out on the Galaxy S3, or that we will see some surprising new entries on the list (like SaskTel or Wind Mobile). However, that’s pure speculation, so, for now, you should just register on Samsung Canada’s page and keep your fingers crossed!

[Update May 10] According to Mobile Syrup, the following Canadian carriers have announced so far that they will range the Galaxy S3:

  • Videotron
  • Telus
  • Bell
  • Virgin Mobile
  • SaskTel
  • Wind Mobile
  • Mobilicity
  • Rogers

None of the carriers have indicated a pricing or a precise launch date, and most preferred to use the generic “this summer” instead. Mobile Syrup also rounded up the Canadian retailers that will sell the Galaxy S3:

  • GLENTEL
  • Future Shop
  • Best Buy

Samsung Galaxy S3 Canadian hardware versions

There isn’t much to say here other than what my colleague Bogdan already told you in his US recap. The Galaxy S3 will most likely be made available in Canada, as in the States, in 3G and 4G LTE versions, with the latter featuring a different processor than the quad-core Exynos.

We have no way to know for sure what chipset will power the LTE Galaxy S3 in Canada, but the best guess right now is that it will be the same dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 featured by HTC’s flagship, the One X.

[Update May 10] According to a Google ad banner for Rogers, which says “Samsung Galaxy S III – With 4G LTE & New Exynos Processor”, the Galaxy S3 may come in North America with LTE and an Exynos chip. That would contradict what we’ve heard so far about Samsung’s lack of capability to integrate LTE radio with its Exynos 4 Quad chip. We’ll keep you updated as more details trickle out.

As for other subtle technical variations between the Galaxy S3s carried by different mobile operators in Canada, we have to shamefully admit that we can’t tell exactly how things will shape up. The S2 came in four different flavors and under four different names (the S2 4G, the S2 X, the S2 LTE for Rogers and the S2 LTE for Bell), so there’s a chance to see similar branding for the S3.

On the other hand, I certainly hope that Samsung will at least try to keep things more compact this time, because those slightly different versions of the same phone only make things more confusing for the regular Joe.

Samsung Galaxy S3 Canadian availability

The marketing team at Samsung is really doing a great job with keeping the suspense around the S3, even after the phone’s unveiling. That’s probably the main reason why Sammy officials are still keeping quiet about the phone’s release dates.

On the other hand, the S3 is confirmed as coming “this summer” in Canada, as well as the rest of the world, so a May release is clearly out of the question. The most recent rumors, coming from pretty reliable sources, tell us that Samsung’s new flagship device might be making its way to North America as soon as June 14.

The date should be taken with a big grain of salt, as it’s far from being official, but we’re almost sure that Canadians will be enjoying the new Samsung mobile experience by the end of June. Once again, based on recent history involving the S2, we might see the new S3 made available by Bell Mobility first, followed a couple of weeks or months later by Telus and Rogers.

Samsung Galaxy S3 Canadian price

I know that many of you skipped the rest of the article and jumped directly to this section to find out the new phone’s price, but unfortunately… we have nothing official to report. Mum’s the word at Samsung when talking about release dates and pricing, but we have a couple of rumors here as well.

The Galaxy S3 will most likely go for $199 on a three-year contract, which would be on-par with the phone’s suspected price at US carriers for two-year agreements. There’s a chance for the phone to go for more though, $299 to be exact.

As far as the unlocked version of the new S3, that also has a good shot of being on-par with the phone’s price in the United States (rumored to be around $700).

Wrap-up

Canadian users that want to upgrade to the Galaxy S3 should start saving money by now, and prepare for a “hot” summer beginning. The new Samsung flagship is expected to come to Bell, Telus, and Rogers in a month, a month and a half, tops and, while one or two of those carriers might be in for a delayed launch, you will surely be able to get your grubby hands on an S3 very soon.

There’s a good chance that you’ll have both the 3G and 4G LTE versions of the phone at your discretion by the end of June, but this is still something to be confirmed. As far as pricing goes, you should have a couple of hundred bucks ready for the carrier-branded versions of the phone, and as much as $700 for the SIM-free model.

Keep in touch with our website for the next couple of days or so, because we will surely have new and exciting things to report about the Galaxy S3!

Bell starts rolling out OTA Android ICS update for the Samsung Galaxy S2

Leaving aside all the Galaxy S3 madness for a while, let’s see what the Canadian owners of Samsung’s ex-flagship, the Galaxy S2, can look forward to these days.

Canadian users have been waiting for quite a while for an upgrade that was initially scheduled for April. Fortunately, Bell has finally started to make its customers happy. The Android 4.0 update should have started hitting your handhelds yesterday, so by now, you might find a very pleasant surprise waiting for you on the S2.

The upgrade is brought to you over-the-air, so you shouldn’t panic if there’s no change on your device’s software at the break of dawn. Instead, you should check for a better network connection, reboot your phone for a couple of times or check out your settings menu for yourselves. If this doesn’t help either, don’t forget that patience is a virtue – give Bell an additional couple of hours to have everything in place!

I don’t want to bore you with all the update’s details and the entire list of new features you will enjoy on your Galaxy S2, but I will tell you this. If you had a good time with your handheld before and though that the browsing, multimedia, and gaming experience were cool and nice, you should get ready for something truly spectacular!

Unfortunately, while Bell customers might already be jumping up and down with excitement as they discover a new tasty software world, Galaxy S2 users on other Canadian carriers don’t have much to be happy for. Telus, Rogers, and SaskTel all have Samsung’s 2011 flagship phone on sale, but neither of the three have managed to update the device to ICS or even announce an exact upgrade date.

Has Bell Canada finally delivered on its promise? Has the Galaxy S2 been refreshed with the latest Android OS version on your phone? Hit us with a comment and let us know!

Motorola Motoluxe heading to Canada, to be released sometime in June

Motorola’s Motoluxe low-end Android-based smartphone was unveiled in January and hit Europe in late February without creating much fuss, making us all think that it would end up ignored by most tech users worldwide.

However, the handheld must’ve been doing something right on the Old Continent, because it has just been announced as officially coming to Canada. With no exact release date or pricing attached to its name, the Motoluxe will certainly be looking to charm those of you who are on a tight budget.

The 4-incher sports a TFT FWVGA display with 480 x 854 pixels resolution and is powered by an 800 MHz Qualcomm MSM processor with an Adreno 200 GPU. Suspected to hit Bell’s and Virgin Mobile’s shelves “before the end of June”, this little guy will unfortunately only run Android 2.3 Gingerbread out of the box (with no planned ICS upgrade) and will feature 512 MB of RAM, 1 GB of on-board storage, and an 8 MP rear-facing camera.

Those are certainly not the kind of features to make the phone a high-end device (aside from the camera), but the pricing should be Motoluxe’s biggest ace up its sleeve. We have no way to know at this point exactly how cheap will the handheld be, but if the device’s price in Europe is any indication, I would guess it will cost  in Canada as less as $225-$250, with no carrier agreement.

As far as the phone possibly coming to the United States, we have nothing to report at this time, but it’s not impossible that we’ll be treated with a US launch announcement in the near future.

You can check out Moto’s full press release announcing the phone’s launch in Canada below, and, for additional details about pricing, stay tuned on our website in the following weeks! In the meantime, tell us if you’ll put the phone on top of your summer shopping list. Also, would you US tech enthusiasts ever be interested in purchasing such a modest gadget?

Rumor: HTC One V to hit Bell Canada this week for $299.95 with no contract

Canadian readers, if you’re looking for a decent, elegant, and affordable entry-level Android-based smartphone and you have a tough time deciding what to buy, your problem might just be solved later this week.

The HTC One V is set to hit the Canadian market the day after tomorrow, as we reported a while back, and could be made available in other markets as soon as next week. And while we suspected the handheld to target tech users on a tight budget, we now have a first confirmation of sorts about the actual pricing of the device.

The guys at MobileSyrup, one of our most trusted sources of rumors and leaks in Canada, have managed to get their grubby hands on what they claim to be an screenshot from carrier Bell’s internal management system. According to the picture, the One V will go up in the North for $299.95 with no contract.

That’s pretty affordable, considering what this little guy has to offer, and should be more than okay for those of you who want to stay hip and get a new Android smartphone, but not spend an arm and a leg for purchasing it.

On the other hand, I find it a bit strange that the One V has the same price tag with no contract, as well as with a one-year, two years, and three years agreement in the leak. I’m not 100% familiar with how Canadians usually do business, but in the States, as well as in most other countries, carrier branded devices are always cheaper than no-contract phones. Oh, well, I guess it could be a spelling error (or three).

For those of you who’ve missed the One V’s formal introduction a while back, let’s say that the phone will sport a 3.7-inch touchscreen with 480 x 800 pixels resolution, will be powered by a single-core 1 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, and will feature 512 MB of RAM, 4 GB of on-board storage, a 5 MP rear-facing camera, and Beats Audio enhancements. The 3.7-incher will run Android 4.0 ICS out of the box with HTC’s Sense UI 4.0 on top.

Will you be looking for the One V once it will hit Canadian stores? Is $300 a fair price to pay for HTC’s new entry-level phone? Will you be buying this with or without a contract? Let us know in the comments section below!

HTC One V to be released by Bell Canada on May 3rd

With the HTC One X set to become the most powerful Android-based smartphone these days (at least until the Galaxy S3 and the LG D1L will be released) and the One S providing a very good balance between decent specs and affordability, the third smartphone in HTC’s new line has been kind of ignored by many tech geeks.

The One V should, however, be on a lot of shopping lists nowadays, as it promises to come with a very sleek profile, Android ICS under the hood, and a dirt-cheap price. The 3.7-incher has already been released in select European markets, alongside its bigger brothers, while Northern American customers are still waiting to hear about the phone’s availability.

In Canada, the One V could hit the market as soon as May 3, if we are to believe a fresh rumor from MobileSyrup. The rumor is based on a leaked internal document from mobile carrier Bell, where you can clearly see the phone listed as launching on Thursday, May 03, 2012.

HTC’s One V should be made available in Canada by TELUS as well, but we are unsure whether it will hit the shelves on the same date as the Bell device.

As far as pricing is concerned, we have nothing official to report, but rumors point towards a $250-$300 price tag without contract. The phone will surely be made available for even less with a standard carrier contract and I personally don’t think it’s impossible to see the One V go for as less as 50 bucks in Canada, as well as in the US.

Those of you who missed this little guy’s introduction a couple of months ago should know that the HTC One V is powered by a 1 GHz single-core Qualcomm MSM8255 Snapdragon processor and features 512 MB of RAM, as well as 4 GB of on-board storage. With a very slim profile and a body highly resembling the One X and S, the V will sport a 3.7-inch WVGA display with 480 x 800 pixels resolution and is set to come with a 5 MP rear-facing camera, Beats Audio technology, Android ICS, and Sense 4 UI.

Stay tuned on our website in the coming weeks to find out more about the phone’s availability and pricing, both in Canada and in the United States!

Samsung Galaxy S2 HD LTE to “come soon” in Canada. Is anyone still interested?

If you’re an Android enthusiast from Canada, waiting for the “next big thing” from Samsung to be released, you should get some comfort (or frustration?) soon enough, knowing that yesteryear’s “next big thing” is at your disposal.

Confused much? Well, you shouldn’t be, because that’s how things work sometimes in the oh-so-complicated gadget market. Everyone is telling you to wait for a new, cool, and exciting device and, bam, you get a slightly different version of an old device up for sale instead!

The Samsung Galaxy S2 HD LTE is pretty much old news in the United States, but in Canada, Sammy’s current flagship smartphone will only see the light of day sometimes “soon”. Exactly how soon can Canadians expect to catch a glimpse of the S2 HD LTE we unfortunately don’t know, but we do know what mobile operator will carry the beast.

Bell customers will be the lucky users to get the 4.65-incher first in Canada, and, if you are still interested in the smartphone, there’s a nice sign up page on the carrier’s official website where you can subscribe and get updates on the device’s availability.

Asides from the fact that the smartphone doesn’t have an exact release date made public just yet, there isn’t a price tag attached to its name either, so, for the time being, we can’t make any bets on its future popularity in Canada.

Then again, I’m not sure how many people are still interested in a Galaxy S2, be it an HD LTE version, considering the fact that we are most likely getting very close to the S3’s unveiling and release. Furthermore, the smartphone is yet to get an official Ice Cream Sandwich update, so, all in all, I can’t see why you would be very keen on getting this right now when there are better options on the market coming soon.

On the other hand, the 4.65-inch HD Super AMOLED display with 1280 x 720 pixels resolution, the dual-core 1.5 GHz processor under the hood, the 4G LTE speeds, as well as the pretty great 8-megapixel rear-facing camera make this probably the greatest Android-based smartphone on the market, aside from HTC’s One X. That’s why, if that “coming soon” message will be changed with an “available” sign on Bell’s website in a timely fashion, I can see the carrier actually selling a couple of handhelds.

Would you consider buying the smartphone if it will start shipping around, say, May 20? Are you holding out for the Galaxy S3 and you can’t even conceive purchasing a different gadget? Hit us with a comment and let us know!

Rogers Canada said to release HTC One X on April 20, according to rumor

Just a week after finding out that the HTC One X will be made available in Canada on Rogers before the end of the month, we are happy to report that we finally have a suspected launch date from a credible source.

According to the Canucks over at MobileSyrup, who’ve supposedly gotten a tip from the “inside”, HTC’s flagship smartphone will start selling in Canada on April 20th. That’s next Friday, for those of you who haven’t checked their calendars, which sounds like a strange release date, in my humble opinion.

I mean, there’s little in the way of science when it comes to predicting the Canadian smartphone market. I do know that usually, in the US and Europe, devices — especially ones that stir up as much interest as the HTC One X — are usually made available closer to the beginning of the week, rather than at the end. Manic monday’s people!

Be that as it may, the guys at MobileSyrup seem to trust their sources, so, for the time being, I think that we should (or rather, you Canadians should) mark the 20th with red in your calendars.

As far as pricing is concerned, we know that the powerfully equipped handheld will be available for $169.99 on a 3-year contract.

The HTC One X is set to be “Canada’s first LTE smartphone with Beats Audio integration” and will try to mesmerize technology enthusiasts with its stylish design, very capable screen, as well as its powerful performance and excellent optics.

Because we are talking about an LTE-enabled phone, the One X on Rogers will not be powered by an NVIDIA quad-core processor, but will still come with enough power under the hood, featuring the dual-core Snapdragon S4 Krait chipset.

Other features include a 4.7-inch HD display with Gorilla Glass, 1 GB of RAM, 16 GB of on-board storage, an 8 MP rear-facing camera, as well as the running of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich with HTC’s Sense 4.0 user interface on top.

HTC’s beast is already available in some European markets, while in the United States it still doesn’t have a confirmed and official release date. Stay tuned on right here to find out if today’s rumor will gain confirmation anytime soon, but also to get all the details about the phone’s US pricing and availability in the coming weeks.

Are you feeling HTC’s latest, and arguably best, beast of a phone?

How to find/remove the Flashback trojan

According to Russian antivirus firm Dr. Web, over 600,000 Macs worldwide are infected with the Mac flashback trojan. The trojan can be installed if you visit a malicious website, and it will attempt to connect your Mac to a botnet.

Fifty-seven percent of infected machines are located in the US and 20 percent are in Canada. There are even 24 infected machines supposedly connected to the botnet from Apple's Cupertino campus. This trojan targets a Java vulnerability in Mac OS X that was recently patched.

It should be noted that in OS X 10.7 Lion, Java isn't included by default; only those who have deliberately installed it are potentially vulnerable to this exploit (or those running Snow Leopard or earlier OS X versions). If you installed it at some point but no longer have a reason to run Java, you should probably turn it off completely or at a minimum disable it in Safari.

F-Secure has provided a set of diagnostics that'll let you know if you have been infected. If you have the malware on your machine, F-Secure's page can walk you through the steps to remove the infection.

Thanks to everyone who sent this in.

Canadian Apple reseller to close as Apple Store opens

Chris Duffie owns The Halifax Mac Store, and he has done business as an authorized Apple reseller in Halifax, Canada for the past decade. Now with an Apple Store launching in the nearby Halifax Shopping Centre, Duffie is closing shop says a report from ifoAppleStore and the Chronicle Herald.

Duffie says he looked at the experiences of other third-party resellers that are near an Apple Store and decided it would be best to stop selling Apple gear and focus on service, support and consulting. He and another sales manager from his Mac Store will join Torusoft, a local consulting company, while his remaining seven employees will be laid off.

HTC One X coming to Rogers Canada in “the next few weeks”

The HTC One X is, by far, the most exciting Android-based smartphone to launch in April (or May, for that matter, if the Galaxy S3′s release date will be pushed towards summer, as rumors state right now), and the Taiwanese certainly know how to build up the tension and expectations for their upcoming flagship.

After being finally put on sale in select European countries yesterday, the 4.7-inch beast might be coming to North America as well in the following couple of weeks. Yeah, it’s still “might” and “could”, because HTC’s officials are, for some reason, putting off the official release date announcement for USA and Canada as much as possible.

In an announcement concerning the expansion of its LTE network, Rogers Canada let it slip (was it a slip, really?) yesterday that it will offer the HTC One X for sale in just a “few short weeks”, which almost certainly means that the smartphone will be hitting the Canadian market by the end of April after all.

Unfortunately, the loose lipped guys at Rogers haven’t mentioned a thing about the pricing of the One X, so we’re still unsure of how popular could the handheld become in the True North. In US, early rumors pointed towards a $599 price tag (with no contract, of course), which could easily make this one of the most successful 2012 Android-based smartphones.

If you’ve been living under a rock lately and you don’t know much about the One X, you can check out all the details on our website. We had an unboxing article last week on the site, where the list of features is also available, and if you want to get a taste of what the One X can do in terms of taking photos, here is a short, but very interesting comparison between HTC’s future flagship and Apple’s iPhone 4S.

Oh, one more thing, before I forget. The HTC One X at Rogers Canada will be made available with 4G LTE connectivity, which means that it won’t be powered by an Nvidia quad-core processor (Nvidia chips don’t support LTE speeds), but a dual-core Snapdragon S4 chipset.

Don’t worry, though, because it seems that, after all, Qualcomm S4 “Krait” processors might just be as snappy, if not snappier, than quad-core chips.

Any Canadians reading us? What are your thoughts on the HTC One X?
