Chainfire’s SuperSU Reaches Version 1.0, Adds Customization Options And System App Conversion

unnamed (2)Those of you in the habit of rooting and/or flashing custom ROMs are likely familiar with SuperSU, one of the most popular Superuser options available. Developer Chainfire has just released the long-awaited 1.0 version of both the standard and Pro apps to the Play Store. In addition to the usual bug fixes (many of which affect newer HTC devices), there's a bevy of new appearance customization in the app settings. You can choose between five different app icons (or none at all), three different Holo themes, or a manufacturer-friendly system default.

Some more substantial changes include the ability to move the app to the /system folder without using an external file manager.

Mu Mu’s iPad mini Deskstand: simple, solid, sustainable

While TUAW has reported on a number of stands that are designed for the full-sized iPad, there's a dearth of designs for the iPad mini. Today I'll introduce you to a simple, but solid iPad mini stand from UK-based Mu Mu. The iPad mini Deskstand is priced at an extremely reasonable £20 and is an attractive addition to any desk or table top.

Design

The Mu Mu team is famous for designing beautiful accessories out of wood. As with the Slide 2.0 iPhone cases reviewed last year, the Deskstand is lovingly crafted out of laminated hardwoods. Other than the small anti-slide bumpers on the bottom of the unit, the Deskstand is nothing but wood. The Deskstand comes in three varieties: maple and walnut, walnut and maple, and walnut. In case you're wondering what the difference is between the first two options, maple and walnut features light maple wood on the top surface, while walnut and maple has dark walnut on top.

The design of the Deskstand is so simple I expect to see a lot of these made in high school wood shops soon. Basically, it's a roughly trapezoidal piece of laminated wood with two horizontal grooves in it. The front groove is where the iPad mini sits, the back groove can house Apple's Smart Cover for the mini.

Functionality

Surprisingly enough, I don't have an iPad mini that I could test the Deskstand with and my first-generation Kindle Fire was too chunky to fit into the slot. You'll just have to imagine what the mini looks like when placed into the Deskstand. I've included a few photos from the Mu Mu website in the gallery; the rest of the product photos are of the stand by itself.

Conclusion

While the Mu Mu iPad mini Deskstand is one of the first stands for the iPad mini that we've had the pleasure to use, it's certainly not going to be the last. It's an attractive, low-cost, and simple solution for holding a mini in place on a desktop, and the use of sustainable hardwoods in manufacturing is a total win.

While we usually give away our review samples online, the Mu Mu iPad mini Deskstand and a Slide 2.0 case for iPhone 4/4S are on their way to San Francisco where they'll be given away to some lucky attendee at the TUAW Meetup on Friday night.

Apple R&D spending spiked at the end of 2012

Apple may be on the top of its game lately, but that doesn't mean the company isn't still looking forward. According to the LA Times, the company from Cupertino has jumped up its research and development spending over the last quarter, by a whopping 33 percent. According to the most recent earnings statement, Apple raised the R&D budget by $252 million to more than $1 billion, which is even higher than the 32% jump in the previous year. Clearly, Apple's got something brewing in the R&D department lately.

But of course, there's no telling exactly what. For its part, Apple says the increased spending is due to "an increase in headcount and related expenses to support expanded R&D activities," and we already know that Apple's making a big push at a new R&D facility in Israel (not to mention that it's following up on R&D opportunities elsewhere as well). Innovation is a huge part of Apple's success so far, and this increase is spending is just another way Apple's hoping to stay on top. Hopefully we'll see the fruits of this investment at some point in the future.

Xcode 4.6 released alongside iOS 6.1

Mac and iOS developers get some update love from Apple today, too. That's because Xcode has been bumped up a notch to version 4.6 to bring support for iOS 6.1 along with some other under-the-hood improvements. Weighing in at 1.54 GB, the update is now available via Software Update and the Mac App Store.

Straight from Apple's own release notes, here's what v4.6 of the SDK has to offer:

  • Code completion heuristics are more accurate, and use an optimized default data set.
  • New compiler warnings help identify potential bugs when using ARC and weak references.
  • C++11 support for 'user defined literals' and 'unrestricted unions' features.
  • Debugger can inspect elements within NSArray or NSDictionary objects.
  • Analyze now performs deeper cross-function static analysis of Objective-C and C++ code.
  • The number of indexing passes is reduced due to improved dependency checking.
  • Additional bug fixes and stability improvements.

Apple TV update includes Up Next, Bluetooth keyboard support and more

As is becoming common practice, Apple today launched an update to the Apple TV software alongside its latest version of iOS for the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. This latest iteration of the media streamer's OS -- version 5.2 -- introduces a couple of really nice features in the form of Up Next, support for Bluetooth keyboards and enhanced iTunes in the Cloud functionality.

Up Next, introduced in iTunes 11, lets you queue up songs and see a list of what's going to be playing. Hopefully its introduction on Apple TV is a sign that it's not too far off on other iOS devices. With iTunes in the Cloud on Apple TV, you can now stream purchased music in addition to movies and TV shows. As for Bluetooth keyboard support, that's just a no-brainer, really, and something we've been looking forward to for quite a while.

New SwiftKey Flow Beta Now Available, Allows ‘Flowing’ In Basically All Text Fields, Better Corrections, And Tons More

2

Finally! Since the first SwiftKey Flow beta hit the scene, the inability to "flow" in all texts fields has been driving me crazy. Thank God that's been fixed in the newest beta. Phew.

1

We're likely getting closer to a final release of Flow, so this beta appears to be more about polish and less about features – and that's a good thing. Aside from the ability to Flow anywhere, it also brings easier corrections, new languages, a new theme, and more. Here's a look at the full changelog:

Changes in this version:
* Predictions (and Flow) now on in most places (exceptions: email fields, passwords, anywhere where the app doesn’t behave itself with SK, fields offering their own corrections on Android versions <= 2.2)
* Easier corrections – just tap on the word and SwiftKey will offer you 3 possibilities
* New languages: Thai, Vietnamese, Bosnian, Albanian, Javan, Sundanese (plus those added in 3.1)
* Features from SwiftKey 3.1: Berry theme, split layout in landscape on phones, Armenian, Azerbaijani, Georgian, Hindi, Hinglish, Irish, Macedonian, Spanish (Latin America) and Tagalog
* New layouts for Hindi and Russian
* Ukrainian landscape layout fixed
* Backspacing on to the final word of a multi word prediction (Flow through space)  will now give better alternatives
* Typing style now inferred rather than a setting
* Long press delete accelerates after the first word

Bugs fixed:
* Flowing off shift no longer triggers a change in shift state
* Flow no longer gets stuck when you flow off the bottom of a page
* Quick period working after single letter words
* Arrow key repeats
* Learning when sending messages or tabbing between fields with the enter key fixed
* Azeri capital i behavior corrected
* Estonian will now predict words containing ö
* Fixed force close on Beta predictions
* Flow trace no longer left behind after flowing
* Mounting an SD card will turn predictions off only if SwiftKey language packs are stored on that SD card
* Keyclick sounds no longer doubled
* Haptic duration made consistent with flow on and off

Woo, that's a big'un.

Breaking: Oscar Meyer Weinermobile “Hotdoggers” to get iPhones in June

Breaking Oscar Meyer Weinermobile 'Hotdoggers' to get iPhones in June

In perhaps one of the biggest Apple stories of the year, CITEworld is reporting that Oscar Meyer's Weinermobile drivers -- AKA "Hotdoggers" -- will be switching from Android phones to iPhones in June of 2013.

To be frank, most of the article is about how the team of Hotdoggers had a beef (100 percent all beef?) with not being able to access their daily calendars on the road since they were only able to perform that task through secure work laptops. The calendars are critical to the roving weinies, since they need to pitch local media, make travel arrangements and inform contacts of when the giant sausages will be pulling into town.

To ketchup with changes in technology, the Weinermobile teams get to test-drive a new mobile app in May, and the red-hot app goes into full production in June. While the phones are going iOS at the same time, the Hotdoggers are getting the wurst possible news about their forthcoming tablets -- they'll be from Samsung, not Apple. There's no crying over chopped onions, though. They'll need to grill the brats in IT about that oversight ... apparently they didn't feel that iPads cut the mustard. We're sure, however, that the Hotdoggers will relish their new iPhones.

iOS 6.1 ready for download, improves iTunes Match, adds movie ticket purchsing via Siri and Fandango

iOS 6.1 has been a curious update. It offers a minor handful of API upgrades for developers but otherwise has been a way for Apple to tweak internals. First appearing November 1st, the beta has had occasional updates, most recently moving to the fifth beta last night before its final release to the public.

Interestingly, the few API upgrades centered around Apple's troubled Maps API.

In any case, it's been a heck of a long time coming, and it's good to see the release finally make it out to the public. Especially since a lot of devs were worried that the beta would expire before going gold.

Other new features that are new to iOS 6.1:

  • LTE support for more carriers, with a complete list of supported carriers at www.apple.com/iphone/LTE/.
  • Purchase movie tickets through Fandango with Siri (US only).
  • iTunes Match subscribers can now download individual songs from iCloud.
  • New button to reset the Advertising Identifier.

Full information is available at http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1222

Check your iOS Settings app for over-the-air updates or request the upgrade from iTunes.

(Many thanks to Erica Sadun for providing information about the API upgrades)

End Of The Line: Verizon Is Discontinuing The 32GB Galaxy S III, DROID RAZR, DROID 4, And More

6-4-2012verizongsiii-1338928394

We just received a reliable tip that Verizon has officially discontinued the 32GB flavor of the Galaxy S III, among other Android handsets. Final shipments of the 32GB GSIII have already been received from Samsung, meaning you can expect the remaining stock to dry up over the next month or two (so you'll be able to find it for a while yet). The 16GB Galaxy S III will continue to be available.

According to this document, the HTC Rezound is now officially dead and gone, though it's been off of Verizon's website for some time now. In addition, the DROID 4 and original DROID RAZR are also on the way out, with final shipments having been sent for both handsets.
