The Artiphon Instrument 1 uses an iPhone, Engadget tries it out

Artiphon unveiled its Instrument 1 late last year when it released teaser images that hit the internet like wildfire. Now that the multi-instrument device is nearing launch, the company has given Engadget a private tour of the device at NAMM 2013.

Designed and made in Nashville, Tenn., the unique instrument combines the beauty of a traditional wooden instrument with the flexibility of a digital music-driven device. The instrument is crafted of African hardwood and powered by an iPhone 5. It includes two integrated speakers and a built-in battery, making the Instrument 1 a truly portable device.

It works with any core MIDI-enabled apps and is meant to replicate a wide variety of musical devices including guitar, violin, banjo and more. The Artiphon 1 will soon be available for pre-order from Artiphon's website and will cost under US$1,000. You can watch a quick hands-on in the Engadget video embedded below.

H.265 video gets ITU approval

Web and mobile video will soon get a boost thanks to H.265, a new video codec recently approved by the ITU. H.265, known as High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC), will deliver high-resolution video with half the bit rate of its predecessor, H.264.

More than 80 percent of web video is now encoded with H.264, and the standard is supported by most technology companies including Apple. The ITU expects companies to start phasing-in support for H.265 in their next generation products and some companies, like Broadcom and Ericsson, have already showcased the technology.

jOBS film reviews start rolling in

Ashton Kutcher's jOBS movie will land in theaters on April 19th, and a few technology sites have gotten a sneak peek at the film. Reviews are mixed with The Next Web generally enjoying the film, and CNET saying the effort "falls flat." The Verge hits the middle ground with both praise for the way Ashton Kutcher captured Jobs' mannerisms and criticism of the film's oversimplification of supporting characters.

"But, overall, jOBS works. The lead actors are likable and appear to have put serious effort into getting the spirit of the characters right. The film looks (mostly) good aside from some of what could likely be ascribed to budgetary constraints. And though the director is a tad indulgent here and there, it doesn't take away from the overall feeling of 'decent' that I came away with." -The Next Web

"It's not quite the Academy Award-winning epic fans might be hoping for, but it's far from a disaster." -The Verge

"Others will write of the things jOBS omits, gets wrong or simply avoids. My primary disappointment was in how shallow the film felt, given the extensive historical record." -CNET

You can read the full reviews on CNET, The Verge and The Next Web.

Staples in the US to sell Apple gear?

Staples is not an authorized Apple reseller (although the company does sell Apple gear in Canada), but a new rumor suggests the office supply store could soon start selling Apple gear here in the states. According to a report by 9to5 Mac, Staples was listing an Apple TV for a low US$49.99 price tag. The page, which is no longer available on Staple's website, listed the Apple TV along with a $24.99 Lightning cable under the "customers who viewed this also viewed" heading. An Apple mock up section on the site also contained a variety of Apple-branded products.

MacRumors says it received word that Staples would begin selling Apple gear, but had no evidence of this claim until this recent leak.
